Welcome to Day 2 of The Drink Guy’s Advent Calendar!
After kicking things off with the festive delight of Danish Juløl, we’re diving into a local treasure trove: the vibrant craft breweries of East Vancouver—or, as the locals lovingly call it, Yeast Van.
This area is a haven for beer enthusiasts, offering an eclectic mix of breweries brimming with character, flavour, and a warm holiday buzz. These spots are as fun and lively as the people who frequent them. Whether it’s a quick pint or a full evening of exploration, the East Van brewery scene is a must for this time of...

If you’re of Danish descent like I am, you may know Juløl—that dark, sweet, candy-like lager that feels like Christmas in a glass. Growing up with it, this seasonal brew became a cherished part of my holiday traditions.
No Ordinary Beer
Juløl is no ordinary beer. Flavoured with licorice, black currant, Munchener, and caramel malts, it’s a bottom-fermented wiener beer with a beautifully layered profile. But what does “bottom fermented” mean?
Simply put, it’s a slower fermentation process where yeast settles at the bottom of the liquid, occurring at a cooler...

Go big or go home seems to be the edict for a boozy cocktail for eager budget minded tourists.
We know travel can get costly, that’s no secret, but libations that give you your money’s worth certainly put a smile on a holiday traveller’s face.
The technique of “free pour” for a tall delicious drink, doesn’t happen all that often. At least not in the northern climates, but when it does? The shock and amazement of watching that never-ending alcohol stream quickly turns into desire and want. Maybe even a need?
Sitting across from a bartender in the theatrical throws...

Negroni is a cocktail, made of equal parts gin, usually sweet vermouth, and Campari. Campari being the key ingredient with its distinct, almost medicinal flavour, that is mellowed, but strengthened with the addition of the other two ingredients. Not a weakened flavour by any means.
Think of it as 1/3, plus 1/3, plus 1/3, to make that whole, and you’ll never go wrong.
My first memories of Campari was of my Danish cousin drinking it mixed with soda water in Copenhagen to settle her stomach and aid in her digestion. Yes, Campari is considered a stomach bitter, a...

I was finally able to visit their old world, blended with new world, sampling show room in the heart of Granville Island, local tourist destination over this past holiday season.

A woman got married and had thirteen children, then her husband died. She married again and had seven more children. Again her husband died. She remarried and this time had five more children. She finally died after having twenty five children.
Standing before her coffin, the preacher prayed for her. He thanked the Lord for this very loving woman and said, "Lord, they're finally together."
One mourner leaned over and quietly asked her friend, "Do you think he means her first, second, or third husband?"

Spain Wins the World Cup!!!!!!!!!
The World Cup is over and Spain sits on top of the world, literally. They have even surpassed Brazil as the number one team on the planet, doing so before the final game even started.
Congratulations go out to the soccer team from Spain, they definitely were the better team in defeating the Netherlands, 1-0 in extra time. I must say, being one of the pre-tournament favorites and the reigning European Champions, it was surprising to see how slowly they started this World Cup Tournament.

The inebriated guy waved his shotgun in the general direction of the sky, pulled the trigger and damned if he didn't hit the duck.

The World Cup of Soccer, or as we real people like to call it "FOOTBALL," is once again upon us.
This month long sporting event, played every four years, is easily the most watched, most exciting and biggest sporting event to be displayed on the world stage.
The world cup is an event unlike any other sporting event. Football, or soccer is the most popular sport on the planet. What I mean by this is simple; whereas baseball is America's pastime, it's not too popular the world over.

A Lady Drinks What?
A lady drinks, generally, something a little more sophisticated or classy, compared to what a guy drinks.
It's more about style when it comes to what ladies drink. With wine being the drink of choice here, red or white.
There is no favoritism when it comes to wine. All a matter of preference. And unless they know you well, a lady drinks white wine as it doesn't stain the teeth or ruin your cloths if it happens to spill.
A ladies drink also tends to be a little more colorful and flavorful. Cocktails and martinis are a close second to the wine. Having more alcohol...

Guy Drinks
A guy drinks what ever he feels like. Beer, shots, martinis, wine, pretty much whatever mood hits him.
Let's be honest about this, most of us guys aren't overly "cultured" when it comes to a drink passing our lips. I generally only see a handful of men order wine with a meal and most times it's the wrong wine with their meal of choice. I personally hate red wine, so whether it's steak, chicken or seafood, I'm having a glass of white if I really want wine.
If going out to the pub a guy drinks an assortment of beer, usually in pitchers, and depending on how many guests are...

The Patron Saint
St. George gives us a reason for celebration around the world, and that's just what we do. His memorial is celebrated on the 23 of April, and he is regarded as one of the most prominent military saints.
St. George was, according to tradition, a Roman soldier and priest in the Guard of Diocletian (an anti- Christian Roman Emperor), who died a martyr's death in 303 A.D.
The earliest literacy reference to St. George comes from Eusebius of Caesarea who, in 322 A.D., writes of a noble- born soldier of high rank in the Roman army, being thrown into prison for...

A Sunday school teacher asked her class the question: "When you die and go to Heaven, which part of your body goes first?"
Suzie raised her hand and said, "I think your hands, because when you pray, you hold your hands together in front of you and God just takes your hands first."
"What a wonderful answer!" The teacher said.
Now little Johnny raised his hand and said, "Teacher I think it's your legs."
The teacher looked at him warily. "Now Johnny, why do you think it would be your legs?"
Little Johnny said, "Well, I walked into Mommy and Daddy's bedroom the other night,...

Jesse James and Sandra Bullock are still the Hollywood buzz as we continue our great Drink Guy fans discussion in Episode 10 of TDG TV! This time with the help of a male fan we discuss whether Sandra has any fault in the affairs, and why did they not learn from Tiger Woods?
As the story goes Sandra Bullock apparently appears completely oblivious as her famous husband Jesse James, has his way with anyone and everyone who walks through the front door, apparently following the example of Tiger Woods!
Is it necessarily Sandra's fault for being away working all the time, while Jesse's...

It started so simply, with a suggestion that a "Shot Shared Around the World" by some of the FaceBook Drink Guy fans would be fun.
When the questions began to come in about what shot could be created with the ingredients that people had available, our bartender Glenn came to the rescue, and created a fun and fabulous party on the fan page!
The shot, a "6/49" ...is a "random" shot named after the Canadian lottery, and the process is simple, fun, and the results are interesting!!

Since we've been talking about infidelity, here's one for ya.
A woman is in bed with her lover when she hears her husband opening the front door. "Hurry," she says, "Stand in the corner." While he stands in the corner she rubs baby oil on him and dusts him all over with talcum powder. "Pretend you're a statue!" she tells him.
"What's this?" the husband asks as he walks in the bedroom.
"Oh that's a statue I bought," the wife replies. "The Andersons have one and I liked it so much I got one for us too."

It always amazes me how much the presence of a home bar draws people. Despite the fact that I spend my days working behind one, when I arrive at someone's home for a social event, I am always pleasantly surprised if they have a home bar set up, and immediately feel the need to check it out.
As I make my way over for a much needed drink, I reflect on what my ideal home bar set up would be. A bar is always the center piece of any party or get together, as this is where the masses will gather for conversation and the all important, “grab a drink”.
Whether simple or complex, a bar...

The Pickup line, I've heard them all. Being a bartender definitely has its privileges. As I've stated earlier we get to see and hear everything.
One such observation, albiet extremely humorous as time passes and more alcohol is consumed, is the mating ritual of the homosapien.
The mating ritual generally begins immediately upon entry into the bar. First off we all need to check out the scene.
Don't kid yourself we all do it, guys, girls, bartenders, servers, busboys, doorman, the DJ etc. Anyone drinking, working or sometimes both, does it.
We need to see who's available,...

"When watching sports at home, as opposed to the "rowdy" nature of a stadium, sports fans may have the smallest amount of shared company but also the greatest degree of freedom. This is sometimes where the most intense cheering or jeering will take place among particularly devoted sports fans...depending on the company they keep for such an event.
In the case of particularly frustrating and disappointing moments in sport for such a fan, is it appropriate for such extreme reactions as punching a hole in the wall...

As a bartender I've seen my fair share of people, and if someone wants great service, they need to know what Bar Etiquette is all about. It amazes me how rude some people can be, or how bent out of shape they get if you're not "on top of them'. There are other people here, not just you.
By definition etiquette means conventional requirements as to social behavior; proprieties of conduct as established in any class or community or for any occasion. Etiquette has to do with good manners. It's not so much our own good manners, but making other people feel comfortable by the way we...

Flaming drinks definitely pleases all due to its showmanship. All alcohol's burn, usually a bright blue flame, however some better than others. The higher the percentage or proof the better it lights. Most cream based liqueurs, not so much so. So don't waste your time on them.
This is all about the show, and done right will have anybody eating out of your hands. Some quick notes, make sure to extinguish the flame before you drink, it will burn all the way down. Alcohol burns hot so don't use a cold glass, a sudden change in temperature could crack/ shatter the glass and ruin...

Before we get to some recipes, lets discuss the margarita. This drink consists mainly of tequila, any orange flavor liqueur, such as triple sec, Cointreau or Grand Marnier, the juice of one lime or sweet and sour lime bar mix, ice and salt. This is the basic margarita, remove anything and you might as well call it something else.
Like the martini, there have become endless variations to the margarita. Such as adding new flavors like strawberry, raspberry, mango or peach. On the rocks or crushed ice, a slushy, using a blender. Substituting salt for a sugar rim, for all you wimps,...

The Bartender and the Life Coach are back, this time dealing with the question of how to handle the changing dynamics of a long term friendship. There are literally thousands of drinking games to be played, but these three will help you get drunk, get to know your friends or possibly get you a free drink from the bartender. You also won't need any cards, which usually get wet or stuck together, or bottles or any other object that could be hurled at the loser/winner (however you choose to look at it). Cyberstalking
So I was at my significant other's place the other day, and needed to use the computer. My SO told me to go ahead, so I did. When I sat down, I realized that they had a "social" site open that they had a subscription to, a site designed for singles. I knew I should just close it up, but instead I started to poke around. I found "chats" with other people that had started before we were dating, but had continued after we started seeing each other. (A couple months now) I was not happy, but also realized that I should not have been poking around. Now I don't...

This question arrived via email, and brings up many issues, both moral, ethical and legal...we do believe it warrants a follow up post with a more in depth answer, but the bartender and the life coach kick off the conversation in Episode 6 of TDG TV.
Cyberstalking is certainly a concept that goes hand in hand with technology, and a concept that has become quite a concern. There are many levels to consider, from the simplicity of a significant other accidently finding your email open and reading a message or two,...

There is nothing better than having an easy night, making money, the odd drink bought for you and friends coming in to keep you company.
I serve the drinks, we watch sports and talk about everything that comes up. Being the day after Superbowl, not a lot of souls will have the energy to go out. Remember, mass quantities of beer were consumed yesterday, along with huge servings of greasy but very tasty snacks. However, there is something to be said for 'regulars'.
Tonight we praised the Saints and Drew Brees. Fantastic game all round by both teams. We watched hockey and poker,...

How Many is Too Many

Now here is a question for our Life Coach. Since she is woman of superior intelligence, and great looks, I want to know the answer. This came to my attention this week from a young lady I work with. It all comes back as I have been asked the same question, and it’s definitely a curious one. This woman was out on...

Now here is a question for our Life Coach. Since she is woman of superior intelligence, and great looks, I want to know the answer. This came to my attention this week from a young lady I work with. It all comes back as I have been asked the same question, and it's definitely a curious one. This woman was out on a first date, doesn't always have to be the first, but somewhere in the beginning. I know we're all curious in the start of a new relationship. But some questions seem a little much, don't you think?
I've broken it down into a few secondary questions. So here it is: How many woman...

Sunday, the holiest of days. But unlike most Sunday's, this one trumps all. Superbowl Sunday.
Notwithstanding all the other big sporting events, this one captures our attention the best. The lead up, commercials, commentating, halftime show and of course the game itself. This one time, winner take all game, showcases the "Bar Industry". Hot women, beer and sports. The perfect day for "most" men and "some" women. In all my years of doing this, nothing gets the crowd going like this game. If I was to guess, I would think this day alone outsells all the rest in single day sales, or...

Dear Right Answer...
From "Is the Right Answer Wrong?" February 5, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Is the right answer wrong?
"Is it possible to find yourself in a situation where, doing the right thing for someone else is doing the wrong thing for yourself…does the right thing then become the wrong thing? I find myself having been asked to testify against someone who caused me grievous wrongs many years ago, on behalf of children who are now in a position to be harmed by this person. Drudging up my past, facing this person after over a decade,...

Doesn't it stand too reason that after a nice relaxing day off my next shift back was a day in HELL!! We all know what this is like; not enough staff, busier than normal, running out of food and another "person" hooking Rickards White up to a Coors Lite keg. Not sure how it tasted, but it couldn't have been good.
We have special, or rather, choice sayings for times like this. Some a little more extreme, all depending on how bad the night went. And some I won't get into but you will get the drift. Getting "hooped" is a very mild way of saying we were busy but nothing we can't handle....

It happens all the time. It may even happen to you. By some sort of freaky chance of the universe or some crap like that, you suddenly get a whiff of your favorite beer. You are at work and all you want to do is go home, go to your fridge and pour a tall pilsner glass of lovely liquid gold with a creamy white head.
I am wondering if that makes you somewhat of a lunatic. Maybe a fanatic. Some sort of tic anyway. This happens to me. Not only with beer, but with some sweet bourbon or a nice wine.
But what do you do when you are at work and you feel that way. Maybe I am the...

Wow, an unexpected day off. My friend, Scotty the Bartender, needed some extra spending money for his trip to Vegas. The ultimate road trip, watching the Superbowl in Vegas. What could be better?
I had no problem with this. You scratch my back I'll scratch yours. How can you not spend money in Vegas? I hear the food is cheap, but the gambling might cost you. Actually, I think I should ask Rob, "The Brew Master". He was recently there drinking "Newkie Brown" till four in the morning. Hmmm....lol. Just kidding Rob.
I honestly thought I would have more to say. A day off has left my mind...

Our first question for "Don't Cry In Your Beer" !!
From Frustrated February 2, 2010 at 3:27 am
"On a lighter side. If women are so good at multi-tasking, why can’t they have sex and a headache at the same time?"
Lynn’s Two Cents…
Dear Frustrated…
Well, an interesting and fun first question for “Don’t Cry in Your Beer”...thanks for asking. And although the question is obviously in fun, I still of course have an answer for you…which I’m sure will totally amuse our Drink Guy Glenn!
So first, despite the fact that there are many scientific studies that do seem to...

Now being a bartender has allowed me the opportunity to take excessive amounts of time off to do some much needed traveling.
Simply ask and you shall receive, management can always find someone to cover shifts. That's the beauty of the industry, plenty of bodies to fill in.
Just make sure you bring something back as a thank you for not giving your shifts away permanently.
The Caribbean is definitely my favorite place with it's "overproof" rum, this stuff is great in any cocktail or alone on the rocks. And, since being in the nite life we like to spend our vacations out in the sun on...

Ahh Sunday, the day for resting. A day to sit back relax, and reflect on the madness that transpired this last week at the bar. Sunday's are generally the slowest of days in the "service" industry. I use the term "service" as an attempt to be politically correct. However, we all know what I am, and that is and always will be a bartender. To lump bartenders, waitresses and waiters into one catagory just seems wrong.
Now where was I. That's right, Sunday's. Being a slower day gives us a little more time to converse with the masses that come out to enjoy some solitude. Actually it's usually...

What say we start this off right by doing what we've all done to get past a line up, not pay a cover charge or were a little under-age; and that's sneak in the back door.
My editor, the lovely Lynn, who also happens to be our sites advice columnist and life coach will definitely have something to say about this!
However, as “mixologists”; we bartenders have been known to bend the rules a little, and I ain't about to stop now.
I can hear her now, and believe me I've been called a few choice names in the past, and picked up a few nicknames along the way. I will explain at a...

Recently I attended an conference in Las Vegas, yah I know conference in Las Vegas is an oxymoron, but I had a great time. So you are asking what this has to do with the drink guy concept. The point is I spent an evening with a successful internet marketer that turned out to be a person who likes beer. I like beer. So we had fun. If you are interested in her review of the affiliate summit conference in Las Vegas you can read it here.
I told her I was a beer connoisseur and alas I was pounding back Miller Genuine Draft. She called me on it. So I switched to Newcastle Brown Ale, or as my...
